| ACER 17"
LCD - 6MS RESPONSE TIME & 25% BRIGHTER VIEWING
PANEL |
Acer
Computer Australia, has announced that the 17"
AL1751 LCD monitor now features a leading 6ms
response time and Acer CrystalBrite technology
for 25 per cent brighter views.
By applying
an ultra-fine, highly-polished coating to the
LCD screen, Acer's unique CrystalBrite technology
provides users with more intense colour saturation,
superior contrast ratio and sharper photo images.
The final coating to the screen prevents the diffusion
of surrounding light and internal rays, meaning
that colours are read more accurately, images
are built quicker on the screen and overall, the
effect gives users a 25 per cent brighter screen
compared to standard displays.
This slim
and lightweight monitor features a revolutionary
bezel design that allows the monitor to be used
free standing or it can be easily wall mounted
using the standard base, with no need for extra
brackets or fittings. This makes the AL1751 ideal
for use in public display and exhibition areas
where this flexibility will enable almost any
set design to be created. All connections are
housed in the base of the unit which also removes
the unsightly tangle of connections necessary
with some other monitors.
The Acer
AL1751 is available now for $599 inc GST.

| CANON XL H1 |
Canon
Australia have released their first DVC featuring
high definition - the XL H1
The HDV camera uses the same component-based design
as the XL1, allowing parts such as the lens, microphone
and viewfinder to be swapped for different units.
The XL H1 uses three 1/3-inch 16:9 interlaced
CCDs. It captures at resolutions up to 1,920-x-1,080
and at frame rates of 60i, 30p and 24p. Canon
doesn't state this explicitly, but the HDV specifications
allows for 1,920-x-1,080 capture only at 60i,
30p and 24p are captured at 1,440-x-720. It is
likely that the UK version of this camcorder will
capture at 50i (1,920-x-1,080) and 25p (1,440-x-720).
The camcorder features Canon's DIGIG DV II image
processor, which maintains the correct colour
space for HD, SD and still images. The XL H1 can
capture still images at 1,920-x-1,080 to SD or
MMC cards, using a separate Photo button, and
uses the same XL-interchangeable lens mount as
the XL1, XL1s and XL2. It ships with a 20x HD
video lens with fluorite elements, which Canon
says improves contrast, resolution and colour
fidelity by reducing chromatic aberration. It
offers a f/1.6 to f/3.5 aperture, with a 35mm
equivalence of 38.9mm to 778mm in 16:9 mode, and
47.4mm to 954mm in 4:3 mode.
The 20x HD lens features Canon's Super Range Optical
Image Stabilization (OIS) technology, which combines
a gyro sensor with a system that detects low-frequency
vibrations in the CCD image and feeds this back
to the stabilizer. The lens also features a 72mm
filter thread, two independent ND filters (1/6
and 1/32) and focus and zoom presets.
The camcorder offers a wide range of outputs.
As well as the standard FireWire I/O, the XL H1
offers HD-SDI and SD-SDI output for direct connection
to broadcast systems and video editing systems
(for uncompressed capture). STMPE time code input
and output is supported, as is genlock. The camcorder
can capture to HDV Master media or standard miniDV
tapes.
Designed for broadcast and filmmaking applications,
Canon's new Console software provides remote control
over four key XL H1 camera functions: image control,
camera operation, video recording in HDV or SD
and playback. Users will be able to receive a
trial version to assess the software before purchase,
available in late November.
Canon's XL H1 and 20x HD video lens kit will be
available through Canon pro-dealers nationally
from late November 2005, with pricing to be confirmed.

EXPRESSION FAMILY OF DESIGNER TOOLS |
Microsoft
has announced the release of Expression, a family
of professional tools for the design and production
of enhanced user experiences and rich content
for the Web and Windows Vista platform.
The announced
products are Acrylic Graphic Designer: a painting,
illustration and effects tool for creating graphic
designs; Sparkle Interactive Designer: a user-interface
design tool for modern application development
using the Windows Presentation Foundation; and
Quartz Web Designer: a layout and design tool
for creating Web sites.
Incorporating
design concepts into the development process has
typically been difficult due to communication
and technical gaps between design and development
teams. With its Expression family of products,
Microsoft bridges these gaps by leveraging common
file types and languages such as Extensible Application
Markup Language (XAML), HTML and ASP.NET and through
seamless integration with Microsoft Visual Studio®,
which greatly simplifies development processes
and maximizes the creative solutions that teams
can deliver. These tools enable designers to explore
a wide range of creative options using vector
and bitmaps graphics, 3-D content, rich text,
media, animation and interactivity, and then to
integrate those designs seamlessly with developer
code and functionality created using the Visual
Studio family of professional development tools.
